When to Fertilize Your Florida Lawn (and the Rainy-Season Rules)

Fertilizing a Florida lawn is less about how much you put down and more about when you put it down. Our sandy soil drains fast, and the summer rains run right through it, so timing makes the difference between feeding the grass and washing money into the storm drain.

Know the summer restriction first

Before you do anything, know the rule. Hillsborough County, like a lot of Florida counties, bans nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer during the summer rainy season, generally June 1 through September 30. The reason is simple. Heavy rain carries that nitrogen straight into Tampa Bay and the local waterways, where it feeds algae instead of your lawn.

So your real feeding window is the rest of the year. Plan around it.

A workable schedule

Start in spring once the grass is actively growing and the threat of any cold has passed, usually around April. That first feeding wakes the lawn up. Apply a slow-release nitrogen product so it doesn't all flush through the sand at once.

Get a second feeding down in mid to late May, before the June 1 cutoff. That carries the lawn into summer with enough in the tank to ride out the restriction.

After the ban lifts around October, feed again to help the lawn recover from the hard summer and prep it for the cooler months. A late fall feeding with a balanced product helps the roots going into winter.

Why slow-release matters here

Our sandy soil holds almost nothing. A cheap fast-release fertilizer gives you a quick green-up and then it's gone, and a good chunk of it never fed the grass at all. Slow-release products meter the nitrogen out over weeks, which suits sandy soil and keeps you from over-applying.

Water it in lightly after you spread it, but skip it if heavy rain is in the forecast.
